Robert Mueller, Former F.B.I. Director, Named Special Counsel for Russia Investigation

Robert Mueller, Former F.B.I. Director, Named Special Counsel for Russia Investigation

Finally some of them are getting the message.

Country over party.

Ha! Can't wait to see how the brain trust at T_DBAG spins this one as fake news.

Simple, they won't talk about it. That or blame Obama somehow.

Seth Rich, Seth Rich, Seth Rich. That's all they have going! Even though Seth's family came out and said they're crazy. They then claimed democratic conspiracy cover up by his family and family representative.

I like that killary is so incompetent she fucks up an email server but at the same time she's competent enough to have people murdered with no evidence left behind. Makes sense.

Rosenstein has been a U.S. attorney for 10 over 20 years. He's not a political hack. He probably saw that the GOP would do nothing and took matters into his own hands for the good of the nation.

This has completely brightened my day

I feel like a weight has been lifted already. Investigations have started with a fraction of evidence they already have, but there's been nothing but excuses. It took the handing over of intelligence to a hostile foreign power by an inept POTUS combined with evidence of obstructing in an ongoing investigation into his own team.

The times we live in...

The_treason right now is fucking hilarious.

I bet Rosenstein was pissed off that they tried to blame Comey's firing on him.

I love that rosenstein is playing 4d chess and trump is losing at 1 dimensional connect 1.

Thank you for the gold kind stranger, next time, donate it to a good canditate in your area. Help end politicians who only answer to big corporations instead of people.

Preet Bharara tweeted:

Having known him for years, I believe special counsel Mueller is a very good thing. He is one of the best -- independent and no-nonsense.

Correction, World over party

Edit; My first Gold! Turns out you just need to care about people? Or I got lucky, either way, thank you stranger!

Eco's 14 features of fascism always seem appropriate lately...

The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.” The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.” The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.” Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.” Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.” Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.” The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.” The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.” Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.” Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.” Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.” Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.” Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.” Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

Now they're also talking about someone Killary spooky murdered in the 90s.

Absolutely, and apparently stood up to trump about it, when trump tried to fix it, that is when trump dropped himself in it. Which means trump took responsibility for the mistake (haha) blames Rosenstein, and would no doubt fire him next. NOW TRUMP CAN'T FIRE ROSENSTEIN WITH OUT LOOKING LIKE HE'S STILL TRYING TO BLOCK THE INVESTIGATION. Checkmate.

"If the special counsel believes it is necessary and appropriate, the special counsel is authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters."

I can smell the impeachment

Smells like... democracy.

Wrong branch!

The Justice Dept (which named him Special Counsel) is under the Executive Branch, at the top of which sits Trump, who has already proven his position to be abusive/obstructive.

The accountability MUST come from another branch: Congressional. Congress must appoint an independent prosecutor for there to be a better outcome & full accountability.

Hahahahaha. Go fuck yourself, Donny. You're done.

This. My theory on what happened:

Trump: "I want to fire Comey"

Trump's advisers: "It'll look really bad if you just fire him without an excuse"

Trump to Sessions: "Give me an excuse to fire Comey"

Session: "I'm recused, so technically I can't"

Trump: "Well get me an excuse"

Sessions to Rosenstein: "Hey... what do you think of how Comey handled Hillary's emails?"

Rosenstein: "Badly"

Sessions: "Cool, can you put that in writing for me?"

Rosenstein: "Why?"

Sessions: "I'm your boss, just do it"

He was asked to write that memo without knowing how it would be used. He's apparently been quite bitter about being thrown under the bus for it.

Oh god I hope he fires him.

This is the most patriotic I've felt in months.

Number three post over there right now, screencap of a 4chan post, title of the thread is:

ANONS ARE BACK WITH AN INTERESTING THEORY: "If Seth Rich was one of the ones illegally surveilled by Rice/Obama then that implicates them in conspiracy to commit murder." DID SUSAN RICE UNMASK SETH RICH?!

So.... If someone with ZERO connection to someone did something that there's literally ZERO reason to even theorize they might have done, much less evidence that they actually did it, then OBAMA KILLED SETH RICH.

They're insane. It's like political idea vomit, connecting as many political memes as they can, regardless of the fact that they have nothing to do with each other.

I would love an end of the world party 😊

Democracy may, in fact, live another day

They are literally celebrating because they think he'll investigate Seth Rich and prove that Obama wiretapped Trump.

I wish I was kidding.

Rosenstein only informed the White House of this move after the order was drafted and signed, a mere 30 minutes before the announcement.

Thank goodness there are still a few honorable people in our government.

"Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past."

This whole essay is phenomenal. Should be required reading these days. The concept of incoherence as a strategy, not a flaw is also really reminiscent of Sartre's essay in antisemitism.

He was the FBI director under both Bush and Obama until 2013. He's probably as nonpartisan and competent a choice as possible.

They had a couple of front page posts downvoted to 0 again today, because everybody on Reddit except for their subscribers hates that subreddit and will downvoted their BS when it pops up on /r/all. Now it's all SETH RICH, ADMINS SETTING OUR POSTS TO 0, SETH RICH, ADMINS SETTING OUR POSTS TO 0, I LOVE DADDY, SETH RICH

edit: lol T_D is now involved in a voting conspiracy against themselves. Somebody got confused because the subreddit's CSS doesn't let you vote without subscribing. Blames Reddit, gets upvoted.

They're gonna project on Mueller, like accuse him of racism for peddling cocaine to the inner city, or pedophilia for any number of absurd reasons.

In all seriousness, it's very sad what happened to Seth Rich. What's even more disgusting is how people are making up bullshit conspiracy theories over his death. Leave the man and his family alone.

LA Times op-ed "Naming Robert Mueller as special prosecutor isn't enough — because Trump can get rid of him":

But there is no mechanism in place to ensure a truly independent inquiry of this or other possibly illegal actions by high-level Trump officials.

Congress should therefore renew the independent counsel statute providing for the appointment of a special prosecutor, one who cannot be fired by the president or the attorney general. ... The original independent counsel law was inspired by Watergate...the parties colluded to allow the independent counsel statute to die in 1999.

He's directly answerable to Rosenstein, not Trump. However, Trump could order Rosenstein to fire him and Rosenstein could refuse. It happened with Nixon. Two AG's quit before agreeing to fire the special counsel.

And Obama lobbied to extend his term by 2 years (which he got). So he appears to be well liked by both sides.

Non-Euclidean Jenga

Seth Rich, Seth Rich, Seth Rich. That's all they have going! Even though Seth's family came out and said they're crazy. They then claimed democratic conspiracy cover up by his family and family representative.

These are the same evil assholes who harass Sandy Hook parents.

I'm having the best day ever! Accepted a job offer today for way more than I've ever made, donald is getting fucked and I just got a free McDonald's meal!

Robert Mueller has strong history fighting overreach by government as well as an impressive background in fighting international crime and fraud. Here's a clip on his fight against domestic wiretapping along with James Comey in 2004:

Director Mueller, along with Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey, offered to resign from office in March 2004 if the White House overruled a Department of Justice finding that domestic wiretapping without a court warrant was unconstitutional.[12] Attorney General John D. Ashcroft denied his consent to attempts by White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales to waive the Justice Department ruling and permit the domestic warrantless eavesdropping program to proceed. On March 12, 2004, President George W. Bush gave his support to changes in the program sufficient to satisfy the concerns of Mueller, Ashcroft and Comey.[12] The extent of the National Security Agency's domestic warrantless eavesdropping under the President's Surveillance Program is still largely unknown.

Underwater badminton squared

Apparently some guy named Seth Rich died? Who knew.

Time for some deep wikipedia digging into Robert Mueller!

This is what I am trying to say. Wrong branch indeed. Wasn't it deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein who took part in firing then FBI director Comey?

Wait, so Trump fired FBI Director Comey, only to have the preceding FBI Director, Mueller, appointed as the dedicated lead in the Russia investigation? Wow. From Trump's perspective, talk about 1 step forward and 2 back.

Out of curiosity, I checked it out. They are completely obsessed. Talk about distortion and distraction. I had to look it on Snopes. T_D is literally making up their own narrative about that story.

All I see so far is a post linking to a tweet by some idiot with the claim that all that will happen is Trump will now be officially vindicated. As if they supported a special counsel all along and this is part of Trump's 5D Hungry-Hungry Hippo game.

I find myself in the position of Saint Augustine here. On the one hand I want Trump to go down in flames… On the other hand I don't want it to happen yet.

I want him to be a millstone around every Republican neck for the next four years. If they were to impeach him right now they might actually get credit for cleaning up their own mistake. On the flipside I'm terrified of what would happen if he were to stay president and something bad happens.

I guess you could say I'm conflicted.

EDITED to fix capitalization.

AKA the Saturday Night Massacre AKA when the American public started supporting impeachment.

Unless Rosenstein is playing 4d chess, I'm not sure what his role is. He made the recommendation to Trump along side Sessions to fire Comey.

They're too busy talking about some Sherriff from Wisconsin joining the Trump administration. He's a black guy so, it's kind of a big deal over there. A black sheriff is going to fix all of their problems, a lot like Blazing Saddles.

We're teetering. I hope Democracy prevails.

I don't know if TD has turned into /sub/conspiracy or if /sub/conspiracy has turned into TD, but they are pretty much interchangeable now.

Absolutely wrong. Getting a special prosecutor will be the first step in fixing this administration. They can and will: be focused exclusively on this, subpoena, question, depose, lay charges, try and get convictions on anyone involved. Everyone but Rosenstein will have to recuse themselves because their boss is the man ultimately under investigation.

Congress doesn't have shit on that job description.

Now, quit being wrong, get your popcorn buttered and your seat buckled, because this will be a wild ride

Fixed: depose, not dispose.

So could you clear something up for me? Is this better, worse or as good as an independent prosecutor appointed by Congress? Not wanting to shit on the good news but I'm a political noob in a lot of ways and just wanted to clear up a little confusion.

Maybe he's trying to be the Little Finger here. Time will tell I guess.

It's actually closer to being a true conspiracy theorist forum at this point than /sub/conspiracy.

A special prosecutor is still necessary, but this ramps up the investigation further. If Trump fires Mueller - I can't even imagine the shitshow that would ensue.

And so sneaky that she busses in millions of Mexicans to vote illegally but so stupid that she only brings them to California.

The more I hear about actions like this makes me realize Obama, perhaps naively, made a concerted effort to reach across the aisle.

a special counsel would remain ultimately answerable to Mr. Rosenstein — and by extension, the president

Can someone explain how this works when the counsel is investigating the person he answers to?

It's because they are racist. That's the reason.

This does not give him the authority to impeach the president. That can only be done by congress. Hypothetically, the president can be charged, convicted, and sentenced for a crime, while still remaining in office. Impeachment is left solely to the House to bring the trial, and the Senate to actually try it.

New microwave who dis

"It's about 3 p.m. let's see what the afternoon drama* of the day is going to be - OH FUCK YES."

Is this guy the guy to get the job done?

*cause this morning was damn good too

So one thing I always do when I come across a trumpkin on reddit is check their history, and I've noticed a few patterns.

There's the obvious subs they post in like /sub/conspiracy and theredpill, but they almost always like pro sports, usually NFL. They post a lot in /sub/blackpeopletwitter for some reason too

Impeachment is a ladder.

Also, make sure you check out this story: House majority leader to colleagues in 2016: ‘I think Putin pays’ Trump

Reddit Thread on that story:

Read the transcript of the conversation among GOP leaders obtained by The Post

Reddit Thread:

Ryan and McCarthy knew in 2016 about sophisticated Russian propaganda techniques. They knew about Russia trying to sow dissent in European countries. They speculated that Trump could be on Putin's payroll. And for months they denied any of this could have happened in the U.S. Ryan and McCarthy needs to resign immediately. They're either tacitly complicit, actively complicit, or incompetent. They're not defending the American people or the constitution.

Can you feel that? Ohhhhh shit. Wa ah ah ah.

The thing is that in retrospect, over the years since the Clinton impeachment, a consensus has grown that the independent counsel was too powerful and that perhaps giving this person such broad investigative authority and subpoena power sufficient to take down a president was not such a great idea. Republicans have grown privately unsettled by the ferocity of the beast they unleashed. At least that's my understanding of why no one is eager to revive that statute.

i think the problem is that in public schools they focus mainly on the details of exactly what happened, when they should be focusing more on why and how it happened.

it's too easy for people feel disconnected and difficult to understand it completely without having deeper context and an understanding of the culture than enabled it.

for me we never got into the how's and why's in high school, we were never even taught about the genocide that happened in america. it wasn't until college that i learned about the how's and why's, but unfortunately a lot of people don't go to college so they probably never got broader context.

Just like how Hillary was bad enough to lose to Donald Trump in an election that favored her, but is somehow behind a shadow deep state government that - according to The_Dumbass - is more powerful than the actual US government and is pulling the strings behind the downfall of Trump.

Hey its me Ur-Fascism.

I've been using various insulting alternatives for /sub/t_d for a while but I think I'll stick with this one myself, now. That or /sub/the_traitor. Or /sub/the_traitors, to get it across that they're complicit.

I totally think he did. I mean, he went golfing with Boehner all the time. It's McConnell who told everyone they were not to play ball.

It doesn't even matter what Trump has done, those people (the one's that aren't Russian bots) are Nazis. Worshiping a president and posting images of him as a king and calling him god emperor and daddy while they cheer him on in his trampling of the constitution is the most un-American bullshit. However, the fact that they choose Trump as their "glorious leader" is all the more depressing and sad for them.

Here's how the future plays out (from fb):

Trump and advisors take a vacation to Kentucky with his Attorneys General.

The Don orders Sessions to fire Mueller, who refuses to do so and resigns. The former reality TV star turned leader of the free world then orders the Assistant Attorney General to do it, and he also resigns. This goes down in history as the Bowling Green Massacre.

Democrats win the House and Senate in 2018, finally get the Russia (and subsequent cover-up) investigation rolling unimpeded, Trump’s White House tapes come out, and he is impeached.

The White House asked Rosenstein to write a memo listing things that Comey did wrong with the Hillary investigation, and then immediately released it and said this is why Trump fired him see look! Rosenstein threatened to quit afterwards.

If Trump fires him it would be Nixonian.

Which means I expect him to be fired

His letter didn't include the recommendation to fire Comey. Trump just said it did.

I think we have more than enough media to make some pretty damning commercials if they try to play the "ohh look at me I got rid of Trump" card in 2018/2020.

Naw get rid of the orange monster before he shares any more classified info or drops any more massive bombs.

Congratulations! I'm really happy for you, enjoy your free McDonald's. Free McDonald's is best McDonald's!

I feel unsettled. With the time it has taken to get to this point, those under investigation have had plenty of time to bury or destroy evidence.

I saw one line that just killed me "HILLDAWG IS A DEMENTED LESBIAN"

Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby

/sub/conspiracy is toxic and has horrific mods courtesy of T_D

This is like the early manifesto for modern day internet trolls.

Yup, and also keep in mind that special prosecutors tend to take years to complete an investigation.

Which is funny cause the WH admitted there were given only 30 minutes notice before it was announced. Plus, they were only told after the order was signed! Rosenstein is pissed he got thrown under the bus for the Comey thing.

This is fucking great. My patriotism and hope for this country has grown three times the size today. It's absolutely turgid!

This is what a democracy smells like!

We're already passed Nixonian to be honest. Trump is pretty much in his own league now.

He was appointed under Bush meaning he had to serve his full 10 year term which included part of Obama's presidency.

Ironically the recent stir in TD about his death is due to reports that a DNC staffer warned Rich's family that some conspiracy nut was poking around. Now TD has spun that into more of exactly what Rich's family doesn't want.

Trump firing a special counsel that was brought about specifically to investigate him and any potential ties he might have to Russia would be immediate grounds for impeachment.

I know everyone around here likes to think that he has already passed those grounds, but truthfully there are a lot of legal loopholes, and we don't technically have any proof of him doing anything worthy of impeachment (and seriously, for the sake of precedence, we really need iron clad proof of this kind of stuff, otherwise we go down a very deep and dark rabbit hole). Him firing/disbanding this special counsel would be actual grounds for impeachment, regardless of what the counsel may turn up.

His name was Donald Trump. 45th President of the United States of America, disgracefully impeached and executed for treason.

that means i have a chance

"Quit." Nixon called the attorney general, made his request, AG refused, Nixon said, "Thanks for your service, you're fired." He then called the deputy attorney general, said, "I just fired AG, you are the active AG, here is my request." DAG refused, fired. Nixon then called the next person in line, said "I just fired AG and DAG, you are now the acting attorney general. Here is my request." Homeboy took the the hint, and fulfilled Nixon's desires. At least that's how it was explained by my Con Law professor.
