[Update] Lady want's me to pay her medical bill or she'll sue

[Update] Lady want's me to pay her medical bill or she'll sue

Quick update for anyone interested. I was silly to worry, obviously. It was definitely a scam. Thanks for all the advice.

We got a knock on the door this morning. It was the lady and she was sporting some crutches. Apparently my shoveled path works now. She asked if we were going to pay her. I told her no, we would wait for an official letter from her lawyer and let the courts handle it. She tried to argue saying it would be easier to just write her a check or venmo it to her. Still told her no. So she asked for "whatever was in my wallet" to make her go away. I laughed, my husband laughed, we threatened to call the cops. She decided to leave.

My husband is going down to the police station right now to report this situation. We don't expect anything to come of it but just in case she decides to do this again, they'll have a heads up.

[UPDATE] 6 years ago I was sexually assaulted by three men [Maryland]

Hi everybody. I deleted my original post after it reached the front page, but everything seems to be archived here.

Let me start off by saying thank you. I cannot express how valuable your kindness and support is to me. Thank you for listening. Thank you for giving me the strength and confidence to share my story and seek justice. Thank you for reminding me that there are always plenty of compassionate, warm, and loving people in this scary world.

I found out that my attacker does not work with any type of law enforcement agency. Sorry, not such a juicy story anymore. Just a boring old rape. I heard from a friend that this man was now a police officer, but it turns out he was posting photos of himself in his mother’s police cruiser. The fact that his mother is with MD state police is irrelevant. My heart breaks for that woman, and I have nothing but positive things to say about Maryland’s first responders.

I considered deleting this account and moving forward after learning my first statement was totally wrong. I made a mistake. I spoke too soon. That man is not a police officer, but he doesn’t need a badge and uniform to assault more women.

I met with my local PD tonight. I shared my story. They saved the digital evidence and recorded names of witnesses. All I know is that I’ll be in touch with a criminal investigator soon. This is out of my hands now. Those men and their actions are no longer my responsibility. Their horrible secrets are no longer mine to carry.

Truthfully, I am doing just fine. Time heals everything. Thank you for asking.

Thank you everybody. I wish I could hug every single one of you. Your messages mean the world to me.

Husband's employer has a "use it or lose it" vacation time policy. Whenever he puts in for vacation, his supervisor denies it because they are understaffed and can't spare him. He will lose 4 weeks of accrued vacation time at the end of the year because of this. Is this legal? [MA]

Google says that employers may set use it or lose it conditions but they also have to provide reasonable opportunity to use it. My advice is to contact the state department of labor about it.

If you have written proof of this you have a very solid case to take to the department of labor.

That's the problem, he did not have "ample opportunities" to use his vacation. Literally every time he tried, he was denied. He has put in a vacation request every month since May. All denied.

Thank you for this. Very interesting.

[Update] Final update to my husband commiting suicide and leaving us in debt

[Update] Final update to my husband commiting suicide and leaving us in debt

This will probably be my last update, I hope at least. We are in Ohio.

My previous post is here https://www.reddit.com/sub/legaladvice/comments/9vvejz/update_post_husband_killed_in_a_car_crash_...

First of all, sorting things out didn't take nearly as long as we thought it would. Things ended up being a lot more straightforward than they first appeared. I will be filing for bankruptcy, probably early next year. I've talked extensively with the lawyer and weighed my options and that seems like the best way to move forward at this point. 90%-95% of the debt should be discharged with bankruptcy. So that is a good thing although it's bittersweet.

We are losing the house. We will be moving out by November 30th. I am worried about the bankruptcy/credit issues with trying to rent an apartment, however I am now on the list for pmha housing and from what I've heard the wait isn't long at all. We ended up not being able to count on staying with my sister for longer than about a week thanks to her jerky landlord, so I am trying to find something else in the meantime. I have a few options to look into. Honestly I'm not that sad about the fact that we have to move out of the house. The old place is filled with tainted memories now and I think it will be good to get a fresh start.

I've been assured by the police and my lawyer that because of the criminal nature of opening the accounts in the kids names we should be able to get their credit cleared. That one might be a long road but we'll get through that too.

My applications for Medicaid and food stamps came through so that is some definite stress off my shoulders. I made the girls and myself an appointment at a family counselor which we will be going to next week. The lady at pmha housing was very reassuring and very sweet about my situation and she made it sound like I was pretty much a shoo-in as soon as a place opened up.

Last but not least I listened to the many redditors that told me to make a post over in /sub/santaslittlehelpers to inquire about help with Christmas for the girls. So hopefully we will be able to find some holiday help and that will be another huge load of stress lifted off my shoulders.

I want to thank everyone who messaged me and offered words of encouragement and support. I can't even begin to tell you how much it means to me to know that I'm not alone. I never imagined Reddit to be an empathetic and caring source of comfort but it turns out that is exactly what it is. Thanks again everyone.

(Update) Surprise divorce, Husband cleared bank accounts

(Update) Surprise divorce, Husband cleared bank accounts

Update from: https://www.reddit.com/sub/legaladvice/comments/9xicm3/husband_surprised_me_with_a_divorce_cleane...

I wasn't able to get much done over the weekend except sell the wedding ring for some food/diaper money. Today however was really busy, I spoke to a few people I was able to get in contact with through legal aid!

I'm told by the end of the week I should be with an attorney who can begin helping me file everything I need to begin doing and hopefully begin tracking down where he's put all the money and get some back so I can continue to survive until I can be approved for childcare through state benefits and begin working again.

I'm really surprised about how often this happens, there are entire places dedicated to helping men and women who have their wives/husband's do this to them.

I am filing for divorce, before he can hopefully and for the return of the money into our account and an order to continue assisting with bills, child support and other necessities such as diapers, mortgage etc.

I probably will not have another update to this for a good long time but so many people wanted to make sure I was going to be OK and with everyone's advice to contact legal aid etc it looks like it hopefully might get better soon! I also contacted the bank and other bills that are coming up that I won't make and explained the situation. They are somewhat understanding and hopefully I'll be back at work soon to keep current.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice!

Won $2000 scholarship from a gaming tournament while I was in high school. They said I had to wait until college to receive the money. The organization is shutting down. Can I do anything to still receive my money?

Won $2000 scholarship from a gaming tournament while I was in high school. They said I had to wait until college to receive the money. The organization is shutting down. Can I do anything to still receive my money?

location: I live in Rockville, Maryland, and the organization is based in Rowland Heights, California (I believe)

Basically, I won this high school gaming tournament where the winners were promised $2000 college scholarship money. The other winners (my teammates) started college in previous years and have already received their money.

I only started college this year, but after contacting them about the money they have almost completely ignored me. They gave me vague answers about how they'll get this sorted out "by the end of the school year" (WTF?). I suspect that the organization has run out of money and is shutting down. Their website is no longer up, and they are no longer running their yearly high school tournament.

There was no written contract, but the money was promised. They also made a Facebook post after the tournament saying "Congratulations to this team (mine) for winning $2000 each in scholarship money!", and included a photo.

Thanks in advance! This is a massive amount of money for me (broke college student) so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Edit: to make it clear, this is a small organization, not a big company

edit: I have been contacted by the organizers and they claim they are working on it right now... I think I will still pursue action, especially if they don't give me a definite response on when I can receive my money.

edit2: They told me ""within one month"" to "verify" my identity as a student. I have already provided the information, I'm thinking that if they're not ready to send the check within a few days then I will get legal involved.

edit3: "more or less than 30 days" lol

Their debt to you is likely enforceable, as you have plenty of evidence that you participated in the contest and that the prize was as you describe it. If necessary, you could even ask the other winners to testify to it, but a screenshot of the Facebook post and your own sworn testimony that you participated under those terms would likely hold up in court.

However, that debt is likely dischargeable. If the operators declare bankruptcy, it's likely to be lower priority than the company's secured debts and preferential financing. If the company's out of money, then it'll be discharged unpaid, and you'll get nothing.

How much are you willing to spend to pursue this, understanding that there's a good chance it's futile? You will initially bear the expenses of filing in small claims, and if the court does not allow you to appear by phone or teleconference, then also of your flights and hotel bills for your hearing dates. The filing fees may be recoverable, but your travel costs generally aren't.

I'm on the fence. I agree with you that $2,000 is a substantial amount of money to walk away from, and in general I'd suggest doing your due diligence - finding out for sure whether the local courts allow small claims cases by phone, for example - before writing this off entirely. However, I am also very skeptical that you'll ever recover anything.

The way you put it, I guess I should just move on from this? I don't have the money to buy flights

Thanks so much for your help, I'll be pursuing it

1: the $20 is horseshit.

2: this is time for your parents to go ask for the return of your property or to be reimbursed.

They can also make a police report re: the theft of your property.

My parents contacted the school board earlier but no reply as of now, I’ll make an edit when we get an answer

Coworker gave me an edible and it took me to the emergency room FINAL UPDATE.

Coworker gave me an edible and it took me to the emergency room FINAL UPDATE.

He's been fired!

I came in to work today and had another meeting with my boss regarding the current edible incident. They've terminated my coworker and charges are being pressed. I asked my boss if it was possible to notify the dispensary since I personally want to do as much damage as I can to this guy. My boss took the time to call them and notify his manager. Did it have to go that far? No, but he sure as hell made sure it did.

I don't know if he's going to continue to be employed with them, but i'm glad this whole thing is over now. I've gotten no legal threats or text messages since yesterday and things seem fine.

That being said, thanks for all of your advice and responses!

I'm gonna go get a joint now to celebrate 😁

[Update] 62 Days in jail, Mistaken identity

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/sub/legaladvice/comments/9skxh8/i_was_arrested_kept_in_jail_for_62_days_an...

I've spoken to several attorneys and law firms throughout the state and have settled on one and signed the papers and all that stuff today. I want to thank all of you for giving me advice on what to ask and look for when speaking to them all, it really helped in narrowing it down and figuring out who was the best to go with. I can't really give out a whole lot of information because we are just starting to gather all the pieces and put it all together. There most likely will not be any updates to this for quite some time.

To answer the endless messages I received about race, I am white and early 20's, the person I was misidentified as is also white but in his 30's.

I spoke to my boss and HR and will be back at work very soon and 2 months pay advance that will be paid back with OT. Also my landlord was really nice and is letting me pay the back rent over the next few months in installments.
