Thanks to Pokemon GO, I may have saved an old lady's life
I've been looking forward to the Lugia/Ho-Oh event weekend all week.. I missed out on both of these legendaries in the past events; and for the first time in months, I don't work on the Saturday.
I was waiting around my apartment with the app open, getting some chores done. You can see 5 gyms from my place. Finally, a tier 5 shows up and it's a Ho-Oh. Check the Discord, yup people are going. I decide to go by foot and push for my 50km since I was getting close. I bundle up for the hike and get going, confirm on the discord I would be there waiting in 20 minutes, and a bunch of people acknowledge the start time. It was about negative 1 degree celsius outside.
As I go to walk my usual route, I decide to take an alternate route because there was a group of people playing with their dogs in the way. Not a big deal, other way is the same distance.
As I'm walking down the more unfamiliar street, I hear a faint "Excuuuuse meee?". I almost ignored it because who talks to passer-by-ers? Decide to look back anyways, and I see a little old lady on the ground in her driveway, in front of the gate to her backyard. I sprint over to her and ask her if she's okay. She says "no, I fell down, can you please help me up?". I ask her if she thinks anything is broken. She says no. I ask her if she wants me to call for medical help. She says no. I then ask her if she lives alone, and she says "yes I live alone. please help me up, my knees are sore and I can't do it alone". So I slowly help her up on to her feet. She's trembling a bit, but manages. I see her cane leaning on the fence and grab it for her, and she braces herself on it and takes a breather as I continue to brace her. I basically had to bear hug her from behind and lift to help her up on to her feet. At this point I'm saying anything I can to encourage her to be strong and calm. She must have been in her 80s. I firmly hug her from behind and calm her down so she can relax for a minute and catch her breath. She thanks me and asks me to walk her to her back porch step. That's where her main entrance was. So I slowly walk her towards her porch and just as we're nearing the porch, I hear her neighbour come outside, and I'm able to wave him over. I ask if he knows her and he says yes, and immediately runs over to help. She confirms "Yes that's my neighbour", and they call each other by name. Now I'm much more relieved at this point. I help the man get her to the door and she thanks me again, and so does the man. He got her inside, and I proceeded on my way to the raid. I check the discord, and others are running late, So I will still make it.
Smoked the raid, froze my ass off, never got Ho-Oh... But I may have saved an old lady's life... Who knows how long she would have been down for before someone passed by? It was pretty cold out, and the street was pretty quiet. If I walked my regular route, or drove; I never would have passed by this poor old lady. I can't stop thinking about this. I plan on returning to check up on the lady Sunday afternoon with my girlfriend. We're going to bring her some Christmas baking.
Sorry it's long, but I had to share. It makes me love the game just that much more now too.
EDIT: Oh my... This post got big overnight! Thank you everyone so much for the kind words, and for sharing your stories too! This is so heartwarming. Thank you kind strangers for the golds and the silvers!!! - What a pleasant surprise to wake up to! I will post an update after we go and check up on the lady today. Stay tuned! ... and always "be aware of your surroundings"!! :D
We need more people like you in the world mate. This story warmed my heart and nourished my soul, you my good sir are a treasure to the human race.
As someone raised by an elderly woman, this is amazing.
If you're ever in upstate NY, I've got a Ho Oh for you!
You did good mate, didn’t catch the Ho-Oh but you definitely caught our praises
I’m very thankful you stopped. There was an old lady that lived a few doors down from me that died from the elements by falling in her backyard during one of the coldest nights of the year. I didn’t personally know her but it’s a horrible way to die. May she Rest In Peace.
As of this comment it seems to have dropped to level 35s already :)
what a weird time to start it. middle of the week at 6pm Niantic Time
Come on 34
EDIT: Boom, level 34 unlocked
27 is active. You should have it
It's been a journey
After exactly 2 years 5 months and 1 day I got to max level. I was actually gonna hit it after exactly 2 years and 5 months, but I miss counted days to become best friends with someone, so I had to wait until past midnight ( check time). Nonetheless, I realized I was 100k and 251 exp away, so I made sure to be exactly 1 exp away after they opened the gift. ( I cold not use a lucky egg this time just for this hahaha)
Was it worth it?
What did it cost?
There was a squirtle defending a gym nearby, so a friend and I had a little idea
I immediately saw the opportunity to bring the spotlight on the first generation. I thought it was fun to share!
It’s the Starter Squad!
If you walk a little distance away, there's a Pikachu.
Yeah it gets less cute if you know that this 80CP Squirtle gets totally destroyed by that 831CP Bulbasaur
Aw that's so cute!! It's really nice to see people who uses small pokémon battling against other small pokémons! <3
On this day 3 months ago I had to put my dog Kuma down, and today this girl showed up!
My German Shepherd had a form of aggresive bone cancer that we caught too late, so I had to put her down in September. I think it's no coincidence this shiny girl showed up this morning! Definitely made my day.
RNGesus works in mysterious ways.
Kuma was a beautiful pup, that's for sure! Sorry for your loss.
Man, right in the feels. We put our sweet girl down last Tuesday and it broke our hearts. I know where you were/are at my friend and I'm glad that you've found something within the game you enjoy that keeps you connected to your furry family member.
I'm sorry for your loss as well. This game definitely helps keep my mind occupied when I'm feeling down. I'm thankful for that
I’m so so sorry for your loss, it’s always hard to lose a pet.
In preparation for battle, you’ll even be able to use Stardust and Candy to unlock a bonus Charged Attack for your Pokémon.
This was the only part of the announcement that had me scratching my head.
While Trainers will usually have to be nearby in order to initiate a Trainer Battle, Ultra Friends and Best Friends can challenge each other from any distance. So, near or far, you can battle with your closest friends!
Edit: In the IGN preview, they added some more clarity about what the Stardust/Candy boost means:
However, along with Trainer Battles, Niantic will now add the ability to unlock a second Charge Move. You can go to any Pokemon and spend additional Stardust and Candy to permanently add a second Charge Move, though Niantic couldn’t specify the final costs just yet.
So that's pretty cool too.
That fucking Ace Trainer medal... Finally!
tap tap tap tap tap
Yeah the first part is throwing up major P2W flags for me.
Edit: if your edit about it being a one-time buy is correct, then that is much better than what they made it sound like.
They are releasing this feature even though neither the game's mechanics or focus are fit for it, just because everyone kept asking for it nonetheless.
Don't say that Niantic doesn't listen when what you actually want is to play a different game.

cant wait to fight people with my army of shuckles.
I mean, I just wanted to walk around in AR playing actual Pokemon as was advertised, but fuck me, right?
I challenge you to a battle!
tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap
Hopefully this means a combat system revamp.
nobody swipes, you heathen
There are so many spelling errors... the person who made it would probably fail 😂
[Screenshot][Humor] Before we all get too excited for the mega community day weekend...
After yesterday's announcement that prior community day pokemon will spawn during next weekend, most people got excited about the chance to get more shinies that they missed, etc. But let's take a second to see what's really going to happen
The random shuckle in the midst of it all lmao
I'd still go out unironically, I need the shinies
Shuckle is the only one worth catching... Going to spend all my silver pinap on it!
As long as I get my shiny Bulbasaur, everything else is icing.
